    Description

Louis Charles Breguet [1880 1955] was a French aircraft designer and builder who was one of the early aviation pioneers. Brequet graduated from a engineering school in 1903 and began work on a gyroplane [the forerunner of the helicopter] with flexible wings and on September 29, 1907 he achieved the first ascent of a vertical flight. In 1909 Breguet designed and built his first fixed wing aircraft the Brequet Type I and flew it successfully at the Grande Semaine d'Aviation held at Reims, France. In 1911 he founded the Societe anonyme des ateliers d'aviation. In 1912 Brequet designed and built his first hydroplane and began designing and building reconnaissance aircraft which would be used by the French during World War I. Breguet was also a pioneer in the construction of metal aircraft, one of which was the Breguet 14 a single-engine day bomber used widely by the French and the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Over the years his aircraft set numerous aviation records and Breguet remained an important manufacturer of aircraft during World War II. Listed for auction is rare [TLS] typed letter signed by Louis Charles Breguet on his personal letterhead, Societe Anonyme Des Ateliers D'Aviation Louis Breguet and dated May 1, 1917. The letter is addressed to a Monsieur Riffard in French, in part reads ''I am glad to inform you immediately that the Under-Secretary of Aeronutique has personally phoned me to let me know that he has given all instructions and agreed with Commander Leclerc for your return to our workshops''. The letter is signed ''Louis Breguet'' and measures 8.00 x 10.50 inches. The letter has expected mail folds and trivial toning AND edge wear otherwise it is in very good condition. The autograph is authentic, signed on a desirable aviation letterhead and is a wonderful example of this noted French aviation pioneer.
