    This is a
    10-day
    auction!
    For auction:
1930 Associated Press (AP) photo upon the death of
    Adolphus Greely
, polar explorer to reach "farthest north" for a European in 1882. He was 91 years old.
Greely was a veteran of the American Civil War.
Greely and his team amassed a wealth of scientific information that is still being used today by researchers.
This photo is not from the Woodhouse archive, unlike my other photos.
This is an original photo from 1935. When a famous person died, the Associated Press (AP), would take a recent photo (recent in 1935) and enlarge the portion of the photo showing the person's face. It would show at the bottom of the photo that it was an Associated Press photo.
This is from a newspaper archive that handled International Newsreel and Associated Press photos for later use by the newspapers.
In a much later decade, probably the 1980's, the photo received the blue "RRW 95863" marking on the reverse. The writing, "Adolphus W. Greely Explorer 1935" was probably also written in the 1980's by the newspaper archive.
PLEASE SEE MY OTHER AMUNDSEN, ELLSWORTH AND BYRD PHOTOS ON AUCTION THIS WEEK.
    Photo measures approx.: 5" X 10"
Please study the scans and photos.
